Peru: 2 buses colide, 27 dead in Puno

Another road accident in Peru killed at least 27 people and injured another 50, according to Peru's Police reports: two buses crashed on a mountainous road near Lake Titicaca, in the Santa Lucia district.

The buses belonged to the Julsa and Destinos transport companies, which operate daily interstate buses in this remote southeastern part of Peru.

Some of the injured told the police and the press that they think the driver of the Destinos bus might have fell momentarily asleep.

This happens when the whole country is debating about the new Traffic Code (intended to reduce deadly accidents) and its high fines, which are rejected by the drivers.

These bus drivers need to be trained and have a log book for the number of hours they drive in a day. they need to limit the hours allowed to drive.

The slaughter on the highways continues.  Zero Tolerance?  What a joke.  The driver fell asleep?  How many times will this have to happen before the government will require electronic, biometrically controlled driver logs?  How about changing the tort laws and allowing the victims and families to sue for compensation?  I am not a big fan of lawyers but it would sure wake up the bus companies in a hurry with a multi-million dollar lawsuit pending.  Forced bankruptcy and liquidation of all assets.  If this happened 1x, the other bus companies would be standing in line to buy and install electronic logs.
Jeezz, louise.  How many times will this have to happen?????????

An Inca Cola costs 3 soles.  A bus ride cost 1 sole.

I wouldn't ask for too much from a 30 cent bus ride unless riders are willing to pay more money.

I do not blame driver for striking, they need the money.

For a safe, comfortable ride, a bus fare should cost at least 5 soles

Something needs to be done.  Too many people in Peru rely on buses for travel.  I have never been more afraid in my entire life than on a bus ride from Arequipa to Cusco.  You take your life in your hands when you get on a bus in Peru.
