In the Bahuaja Sonene National Park in Peru, a new highly-poisonous snake was found, reported the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp).
This park is located in the southeast Amazon, near the Bolivian border, and the snake was named “Bothrops sonene”, in honor of the Heath River that crosses this natural reserve. Its discovery was made during the implementation of a Comprehensive Biodiversity Monitoring System of the Tambopata National Reserve and the Bahuaja Sonene National Park.
Endemic to the Madre de Dios region, the species differs from other because of its green color and C-shaped spots on its back, as well as the peculiar shapes of its scales.
“It belongs to the Viperidae family that has a snake known as pallets (terrestrial), whose distribution is registered in the north and center of South America”, Excelsior informed.
