The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Néstor Popolizio, met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, and the regional director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Diego Beltrán, with whom he discussed Venezuelan migration.
According to information from El Peruano, Eduardo Stein, the special representative for Venezuelan refugees and migrants in Latin America, also participated in the meeting.
“Chancellor Popolizio thanked the UNHCR and the IOM for their help in addressing the Venezuelan migratory flow through the assistance systems in Tumbes and in the Refugee Application Office in Lima”, the aforementioned media said.
He also expressed the urgency of having more resources to adequately address the situation, given that Peru is the second country receiving the most migration in the region.
Grandi acknowledged Peru’s leadership in the region to address the migratory flows of Venezuelans and highlighted the humanitarian approach and Peru’s solidarity by creating the first support mechanisms.
He announced also that UNHCR plans to increase the fund destined for Venezuelan migration.
