In Peru maiz morado, or purple corn, is used to make chicha morada and the delicious dessert mazamorra morada, but that’s not all the corn has to offer.
The crop comes from the Andes, Bolivia, and other South American countries. Many have agreed that maiz morado has anti-aging properties, it helps lower cholesterol levels, it’s good for your circulation, and it’s a natural anti-inflammatory.
Though the corn has many great health properties, consumers need to be aware of the sugar that is added to the desserts and drinks made from it. The more naturally consumed, the better, of course. Other forms of consuming maiz morado include powder form or even as pills that can be taken daily.
Fun Fact: Did you know that maiz morado can not only be consumed, but it can also be used as a natural dye for clothing?
